Brave Tom Tancredo on the Islamic Memorial (The Crescent of Embrace)

Rep. Tom Tancredo has another 'politically incorrect' day. Is he the only hero America has? CAIR is now on the attack.

'Crescent' not fully embraced

9/11 memorial design resembles symbol of Islam, Tancredo says

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo wants the National Park Service to reject the crescent- shaped design of a proposed Sept. 11 memorial in rural Pennsylvania, saying it resembles the lunar crescent symbol of Islam and could be seen as a "tribute to the hijackers."

The design by Paul and Milena Murdoch, of Los Angeles, is titled Crescent of Embrace and was unveiled last week after a yearlong design competition.

It would be built near Shanksville, Pa., where 40 passengers and crew members died in the crash of hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001.

The memorial includes a chapel with 40 metallic wind chimes, one for each of the victims, and a crescent- shaped cluster of maple trees and white marble wall inscribed with the victims' names at the crash site.

Victims' families participated in the advisory committee that recommended the design to the National Park Service for final approval, which is pending.

"The appropriateness of the design has been questioned by many people because of the crescent's prominent use as a symbol in Islam - and the fact that the hijackers were radical Islamists," Tancredo, R-Colo., wrote in a letter to Fran Mainella, director of the park service.

"Indeed, it has raised questions in some circles about whether the design, if constructed, will in fact make the memorial a tribute to the hijackers rather than the victims whose mission the flight's passengers helped to thwart."
A co-pilot on Flight 93 was Jason Dahl, of Ken Caryl Ranch. His cousin, Sheryl Stoll, of Columbus, Ohio, defended the Crescent of Embrace design in an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday.

"I never really viewed it as a crescent," Stoll said. "We saw it as a lovely walkway at the crash site. I don't know if my thoughts will change now."

D. Hamilton Peterson, president of the Families of Flight 93 Inc., said he generally supports Tancredo's politics but wished the congressman would have checked with victims' families before publicly questioning the memorial design they chose.

"The red crescent has been a common humanitarian phrase of art," Peterson said. "If you research the Red Cross, you'll see the Red Cross and Red Crescent societies have been engaged in humanitarian efforts since back in World War I times."

Peterson said use of the Crescent of Embrace title and the crescent design "are not exclusive trademarks of a very small percentage of evil militants. They do not have ownership to that."

Tancredo said that the use of any religious symbol at the site would be inappropriate and that he thinks average visitors will see a Muslim theme without an art history lesson.

"I find it to be anything but innocuous," Tancredo said in an interview.
"Of all the things that could be created for the purpose of memorializing the people on that plane and that incredible event, I found this (design) to be odd, to say the least."

This summer, Tancredo drew worldwide criticism after he told a radio interviewer that the United States could consider bombing Muslim holy sites if radical Islamic terrorists set off multiple nuclear attacks in U.S. cities. He has refused demands for an apology.

Thank God for Tom. There is still at least one conservative in the GOP. Seems most have turned liberal with the President. The party of Reagan has gone liberal, all but Tom.
