As I had predicted in my previous post on this incident, American retirees Mr. and Mrs. Randal Barnhart, who made the mistake of recently vacationing here in the Melayu Islamic Republic, are not likely to be receiving their desired compensation, let alone an apology, any time soon. If ever.
To quickly refresh everyone's memories (no doubt somewhat dulled by mass consumption of cheap Halloween candy), the Barnharts were the recent victims of a Malaysian Sharia Police raid on their rented condo at 2am. Their supposed crime? These 60-something criminal masterminds committed the dreadful Islamic sin of "Khalwat", AKA "close proximty". Actually, Carole and Randal should be hailed for that accomplishment, as most American marriages don't last 42 years, as the Barnharts have managed to do.
As expected, the Islamic cops aren't backing down...not one inch.
Religious department defends khalwat raid on Americans
ALOR STAR: Religious enforcement officers followed procedures when conducting a khalwat (close proximity) raid at a condominium in Langkawi rented by an American couple. (Followed procedure? Gosh, I guess that makes everything ok then!)
A Kedah Religious Department spokesman said the raid conducted at 2am on Oct 12 was made following public complaints of immoral activities at the condominium. (what the hell are "immoral activites" anyway? Kissing your wife? Or handholding with your spouse?)
“The officers only knocked on the door and they did not enter the condominium. (golly, these Sharia Police chaps sound so reasonable. You think they were over just to say hello and chant "Malaysia--truly Asia"!)
“They asked for the couple’s passports and marriage certificate to ascertain their religion,” he said when contacted here yesterday. (because, you know, Muslims have nothing better to do at 2am)
Retired policeman Randal Barnhart, 62, and wife Carole, 61, had complained the officers demanded to see their marriage certificate although Barnhart had told them they were Christians and should not be subjected to Islamic law. (all the bloody good complaining will likely do for you) Following the unpleasant episode, the couple said they were reconsidering plans to make Malaysia their second home. (Mr. and Mrs. Barnhart, I highly recommend you take your Retiree Kafir Dollars someplace where they will be more appreciated. And, while you're at it, try retiring someplace Americans are more appreciated too. Australia perhaps?)
Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor was reported to have ordered Tourism Malaysia to look into the incident.
The minister did not like such incidents, as it spoiled the country’s image, a spokesman said.
You see, the Malaysians are embarassed, not at the ongoing outrageous miscarriage of justice that is Sharia, or the totally unwarranted harassment of innocent tourists who did nothing wrong. No, Mr High-and-Mighty Tourist Minister is only concerned because this rather public incident makes his country look bad. "Losing face" in Asian cultures is very, very important, don't cha see.
Infidel retirees and tourists, you can help Malaysia along in their quest for Islamic purity. Never, ever come here.
