I'd say the ridicule is richly deserved after an American retired couple was harassed and manhandled by the Sharia Cops:
Lim: We’re been ridiculed over raid on US couple
The Tourism Ministry (has) received many letters expressing ridicule over the recent raid by religious authorities on an American couple in Langkawi, said Deputy Minister Datuk Donald Lim. He said some of the letters scorned him, asking if he takes along his marriage certificate when travelling overseas with his wife.
Richly deserved scorn, I would say again. And yes, Mr. Minister, do you take your marriage certificate with you when travelling with your spouse, not just overseas, but in your own country? After all, you never know when such documentation might be, er, useful.
“We are concerned, and hope that they (the religious council) can standardise the procedure (in conducting raids),” he said, noting that the councils in different states had different practices.
On Oct 12, Randal Barnhart, 62, and his wife Carole, 61, were in their rented condominium in Kuah when enforcement officers knocked on their door at 2am, accusing them of committing close proximity and demanding to see their marriage certificate.
"Standardise the procedure?" Lame, lame, lame! How pathetic can those Malaysian ministers get? I'd say damn pathetic.
Lim said the issue was raised at a recent meeting of the sub-committee on foreign tourism attended by about 60 representatives from agencies and private organisations. He noted that the Federal Islamic Development Department (Jakim)did not send any representative to the meeting.Hey Minister, how about voicing the radical idea of doing away with such raids altogether? Nah, that will never happen.
"We hope the Prime Minister’s Department could come up with a guideline (on how khalwat raids should be conducted)," he told The Star at the International Chinese Tourist Association Conference 2006.
