Peter Taylor: Algeria and the Rise of Islamist Extremism

BBC: Watch seven-year-old Abdelkahar Belhadj address a political rally

BBC: One of the most remarkable archive sequences we came across while researching the Age of Terror programme, features a seven-year-old Algerian boy called Abdelkahar Belhadj. He is seen addressing a political rally of thousands in 1991 with all the confidence and fire of a mature adult.

"There are a billion Muslims and we don't have a state that rules by God's Holy Law. Isn't that a dishonour and a shame on us?" he proclaims in the voice of a child.

He is cheered ecstatically and lifted on high. It was revelatory to hear the philosophy of jihad - the struggle to overthrow infidel regimes and replace them with Islamic states under Sharia law - emerging from the lips of one so young.

In 2007, 16 years later, we watched another clip, a propaganda video announcing the launch of al-Qaeda in North Africa featuring non other than Abdelkahar Belhadj, now a fully-fledged jihadi.

When I first saw the clip of the young Belhadj, I was instantly reminded of an interview I'd done in an IRA stronghold in Belfast in the mid-seventies with a little boy called Sean. I vividly remember he had the initials IRA inked on the back of his hand.

Sean told me he wanted to fight and die for Ireland. Years later I met him again, this time on an IRA wing inside the Maze prison. He had gone to jail after fighting for the cause he had embraced all those years ago.

Sean and Abdelkahar Belhadj illuminate the bigger picture of the Age of Terror: how the "cause", be it Islamist or Republican, Basque or Palestinian, flows from one generation to the next and on through the veins of history. Mark, the differences between these two warriors are these;
Sean was a Nationalist fighter for a cause, that being the expulsion of British influence from Northern Ireland and the re-unification of the Northern Counties with a -preferably- Republican South.
As such, his goals were both achievable, and finite.
There would come a day, eventually, when this may happen.

On the other hand, the little jihadi brat wants a world that falls under the rule of what we know to be a fatally flawed idea, that is the imposition of Islamic Sharia law upon every race and religion, be they Sikh, Hindu, Buddhist, or Christian, or merely secular.
Although some territories, such as the "Palestinians" attach a National struggle onto the jihad, essentially, the holy war is their main means to achieve their goals.
This drive for Universal Sharia, is neither practical, nor achievable, and therefore remains both unattainable and of Infinite duration.
To all our disadvantage, and certainly as a block to Humanities further progress and the solving of such huge problems as over-population and environmental challenges.

Mark, further to this last comment, maybe you or JS would like to comment on this story link here.

I pose this question which shows how Islam has deceived itself on it's intimacy with it's creator.
Although this may impinge on Judaeic principles, I presume they may have more open and interpretation in such cases.

As Muslims believe that Allah is the same God of the "Abrahimic" religions, and as history shows that the majority of Islamic ideas were taken from Judaism and Christianity with left-overs from the Meccan pagans.
Muhammed had intimate dealings with the Jews and his first wife's family were connected to early Christianity.

This news story shows how, if Allah is what he is claimed to be, then he must indeed be a cruel God for the Muslims.
Where the Muslim Doctors are happy for science to tamper with genes in the form of laboratory experiments including joining non similar organisms and creating "chimera" existences with characteristics from different species, as long as the human foetuses from which these "Frankenstein anomalies" are created, providing said foetus is less than 40 days old.
These same scientists will be prohibited from using this latest "pixie dust" medical treatment, as the cellular matrix which performs the miracle of tissue regrowth are extracted from non-halal, and totally forbidden PIG'S BLADDERS!

Surely, if ever there was a message to the human race that genetic manipulation is not necessary for medical advancement, and that Muslims are patently wrong in rejecting the humble pig as something as "dirty" as the filthy unbelieving kuffar, then this is it.
Of course what will happen, should this method be extremely successful, is that Islamic "scholars" will re-interpret the terms of the prohibition so that Muslims can be treated for relevant injuries and diseases.
After all, they would not like the infidel to have unfair advantage in the longevity stakes, would they?
Such rewriting would of course prove once more the flimsy nature of Islamic strictures and thereby invalidate their claim of the infallibility of Sharia law.

So, once more the Infidel benefits from God's grace and snubs the Muslim vision of His world.

There are developments on research with a sea snake of some kind which could also prove to provide new substances for treatment of many diseases, including anti-biotics.
I believe (?) Sharia law prohibits such creatures as food and maybe we will see hospitals with Muslims queuing up to die, rather than survive like the Infidel in the bed next to them!
Somehow I doubt their commitment, if such be the case.

You say that, but the fact remains that it has, historically, been achieved in many countries. So I would say that it is achievable, especially in the long-run.

In the UK, aspects of Shari'ah law are already in operation in certain areas.

In my opinion, our legal authorities are being too lax about this.

The link you gave is an interesting one indeed. It is particularly interesting how you make the link of this story with Islam.

The part which shows pigs' bladders being used for medical purposes just goes to show how useful pigs are to us as humans. Muslims simply miss out on the whole thing. As you know, Muslims are paranoid about pigs, pork, and everything to do with pigs.

Pity that!

I agree with you Mark, and I stress the "infinite duration." Their struggle to dominate the world will go on interminably, but I believe ultimately, the whole edifice of Islam will collapse, due to it's inbuilt instability.
I do not wish to be distasteful, but I liken Islam to a tower built with inherent flaws within it's architecture.
Eventually certain stresses will cause it's collapse, either progressively or catastrophically.
Either way, we will suffer because of it, no doubt.
